Joe Newberry and April Verch - I Can't Sit Down
April 12th 2024, just looking through some videos in my library and notice that it is six years to the day that Joe and April willingly allowed me to video their performance at Cecil Sharp House in London and OK'd it for me to post the results here. This is a really nice performance of the Wade and Julia Mainer song which I believe is well worth adding here.

This track was digitised from a cassette issued on the now defunct Marimac label No. 9018. It was recorded, mastered and edited by Andy Cahan in 1988. I don’t believe it has ever been re-issued. Carlie tells of his start on the banjo before Andy Joins him on fiddle and vocals. The photograph by Sylvia Pitcher was taken at Mount Airy, N.C. in 1988.

      I am not sure if Etta claimed to have originated this piece. Dave Stacey learned it from the recording made by Lacey Phillips who from memory I believe was married to Etta's sister Cora. There is a version on you tube where Etta plays it accompanied by her sister Cora Phillips playing guitar.

    This is really cool. Carlie Marion is something of an unsung musician in our area so it was really interesting to hear him talking about his experiences learning the banjo. He played often with my grandpa Verlen Clifton and I know he used to play banjo with the Smokey Valley Boys for a time. Be interesting to hear anything else from that tape.

    Played with Enoch for 37 years. For a little while, Alice hung around and did her best to “discover” Enoch. However it all came to naught. Enoch got what he wanted without her so-called help. The tape she cut was supposed to be a really big hit, but you know how it is when one mixes northern hippie with authentic southern. The mixing was terrible, Alice’s sophomoric playing overpowered everything. Enoch finally got tired of all the crap with Alice and we continued on playing until we were awarded the Library of Congress recognition as the best authentic old time band in the U.S.

    • @Backup6Box
      @Backup6Box 5 месяцев назад

      Hey Wiley, as someone who isn't from the South you possibly feel that I am not qualified to comment. That may be so. I am sorry if things didn't go right in your and Enoch's relationship with Alice. However I must point out that she did a damn good job in promoting old time music with her magazine which she founded and ran for so long. Sadly just recently it seems to have died. Many of the Northern and Californian folks that came down South did a pretty good job in helping to spread and promote the music and musicians e.g;, John Cohen, Mike Seeger, Ralph Rinzler, Alan Jabbour, Bruce Greene to name a few.. I assumed that as this track was from the Heritage label then Bobby Patterson was responsible for the recording. Is that not so?

    • @wileymayo1048
      @wileymayo1048 5 месяцев назад

      Yes Bobby produced that tape. Heck, Alice was ok, but it seemed like she became a pest in latter days. What finally happened was hellacious. Anyway, Alice and Enoch kinda fell out over it all. As a result, the tape never did get much support around here. If you are interested in hearing more of Enoch, I am in the midst of organizing my personal recordings for publication. When I finally get done, I would be glad to send you a copy for postage cost. Thanks for your reply!@@Backup6Box
